PEACE III Community Integration Programme Announced

The North East PEACE III Partnership has announced funding of £626,000 for a Community Integration Programme for the North East.  Two separate programmes have been developed, one for the Ballymena and Larne Council areas and another for the Coleraine, Limavady, Moyle and Ballymoney Council areas.

The Community Integration Programme aims to increase the capacity of communities to address sectarianism and racism thereby supporting the development of cohesion, sharing and integration.

Speaking about the project, Patricia McCallion, PEACE III Manager, stated that “last year the North East PEACE III Partnership commissioned a number of reports throughout the North East to gain feedback from a wide range of community and statutory organisations regarding the potential for promoting activities aimed at reducing sectarianism and racism, whilst promoting reconciliation within the wider community.  This exercise set out ways in which we could further develop and support local groups engage in activities that address sectarianism and racism. It also identified significant opportunities among local groups to support their ability and confidence to engage through a range of training and networking initiatives.  As a result of this work, the Community Integration Programme has been identified as an all encompassing initiative that will support communities to move towards a more peaceful, stable, normal and integrated society”.

The Community Integration Programme will build upon existing good relations work within the cluster and where possible open new avenues for conversation and dialogue.

Suitably qualified organizations are now invited to tender for delivery of the Community Integration Programmes.   Tender documents are available to download on www.northeastpeace.com  or by emailing karen.mullan@colerainebc.gov.uk.

Young Persons PEACE Initiative launched in North East

The North East PEACE III Partnership has announced £240,000 of funding for an exciting new programme for young people.

Programme 3b – Youth and Schools is one of a series of programmes being run by the North East Peace III Partnership, which is responsible for managing the European Union’s PEACE III programme in the six local Council areas of Coleraine, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Larne, Limavady and Moyle.

The Youth & School Programme aims to support youth leadership and peace building across the North East area and comprises three separate strands – a schools-based Youth Leadership programme, a young peer leaders programme and outreach work with detached young people. The three strands have been developed in response to a mapping and consultation exercise carried out in the latter half of 2009, and they now form the basis for a Youth Leadership Framework for the North East Peace III Partnership’s Action Plan.

Speaking about the programmes, Patricia McCallion, PEACE III Manager, stated that “they will provide young people with the opportunity to meet, develop linkages across communities and foster trust building across polarised communities. More specifically, the programmes will support young people in developing leadership and peace building skills to become leaders in their own communities. Ultimately, and in keeping with the aims of the PEACE III Programme, the Youth Leadership programme seeks to provide the opportunity for young people to position themselves to contribute to peace building and reconciliation over longer term.”

Patricia then went on to say that the North East Peace III Partnership is in the process of appointing delivery agents to implement the Youth Leadership Framework and that suitably qualified organizations are now invited to tender for delivery of the programmes.  Tender documents are available to download on www.northeastpeace.com or by emailing karen.mullan@colerainebc.gov.uk.

New “Potato” Exhibition launched

A new touring exhibition has been launched by Mid-Antrim Museums Service and Causeway Museums Service for the North East PEACE III Partnership Cultural Connections Programme.

You Say Potato I Say Wapato was produced as part of the Cultural Connections programme which was developed to help increase local people’s awareness and understanding of the unique and diverse communities, faiths and heritage that exist in the North East area. The programme aims to foster a skills and knowledge base within the community that will have a lasting effect on peace building in the area.

You Say Potato I Say Wapato uses the potato as the focus to explore local cultural traditions but also as a link with the wider world, and highlights connections between people of differing origins and traditions over hundreds of years. Presented as a colourful, informative timeline, the exhibition includes archive photographs and follows historical threads as well as testimonies from the individuals who worked alongside the museums to produce the displays. It reveals links between local history and the story of the potato, drawing out the vast range of cultural and geographical influences on each, as well as how the participants felt about the ideas raised around shared heritage, identity and community.

The Mayor of Ballymoney attended the event, saying it was “A fascinating exhibition, showing us that though familiar to us all, both the humble potato and our own area have histories that are varied and exciting” With such a rich capture of history both global and local and such immediate responses from the people in the area who were involved, this touring exhibition will provide a valuable resource for schools, community groups and organisations wanting to explore diversity, heritage and local culture.
